This is an analysis of Star Wars Armada tabletop miniature game. We are going to look at damage compared to points value which could be analyzed as direct and indirect damage. As we go through all the different factors, we will not take into account other abilities. As we do our analysis we will analyze the effects of these abilities.
Average Damage
When looking at damage, we are going to calculate damage by using average damage per dice. When calculating average damage, we look at how much damage per side vs squadron or ship. A person can add the total damage per side and then divide by 8 to calculate the average damage. Anti-Ship (Bomber/Ship) uses criticals to calculate damage. Non-bomber anti-ship and anti-squadron do not use criticals to calculate damage.

After doing the base calculation, for the Empire, Bossk has the highest average damage vs other squadrons at 3. At the bottom of the list are the 4 Tie Bombers doing .75 damage except for Rhymer doing 1.25 damage vs other squadrons. For the Rebels, Han Solo and Hera Syndalla are tied for the highest average damage vs other squadrons at 2.5. There are 5 ships sitting at the bottom averaging 1 point of damage, which are Gold Squadron, Y-Wing Squadron, Scurgg H-6 Bomber, Nym, and HWK-290.
Against ships, Boba Fett with Bomber does 1.75 damage vs ships. While there are 13 squadrons throwing blue dice at ships, which only do damage about 50% of the time. Against ships, the rebels want to use Keyan Farlander who averages 2 damage. Unlike the empire the rebels have only 5 ships that would do damage 50% of the time. The one ship that should concern rebels based on average damage is the HWK-290 cause it is on the bottom for both squadrons and ships.

Points per damage
The next part of the analysis is to calculate damage related to the points value. This was done by taking the points cost of the squadron and dividing it by the average damage, which gives us points per damage.
So, when points value of each squadron is taken into the equation, the Empire’s favorite squadron the the Tie Fighter Squadron costing 5.3 points per point of damage with the Tie Interceptor in second at 5.5 points. The most expensive squadron to take in a squadron battle is Captain Jonus costing 21.3 points to do 1 point of damage vs another squadron. For the rebels, the Z-95 headhunter costs 4.7 damage per point of damage. The most expensive ship to take against other squadrons is Nym at 21 points per point of damage.
The best squadron the empire has to go against ships is the Tie Bomber squadron costing 9 points to do 1 damage. The worst ship to use against ships is Colonel Jendon, who costs 40 points to do 1 damage against a ship. For the rebels, the best squadron to use against ships is Gold Squadron or B-Wing Squadron which costs 8 points per point of damage. On the lower end of the spectrum is the VCX-100 Freighter that costs 30 points per point of damage.
So, to look at the all around best squadron for your points value against both squadrons and ships, we take the total point vs ships and squadrons and divide that by 2. This gives us the average points cost to do damage against both ships and squadrons. For the Empire, the Tie Bomber squadron and Tie Phantom squadron average 10.5 points of average damage. The most expensive squadron to take is Colonel Jendon at 26.7 points. For the rebels, Dagger squadron (8.6) and B-Wing Squadron (8.7) are the cheapest ships to take. The most expensive costing ships for the rebels are Corran Horn (20.2) and the VCX-100 Freighter (20).

Points Value Per Squadron (Ships)
The next part of the analysis, we are going to try and take ships value into account for the squadron price. The reason we are doing this is that Armada is broken down to 4 different phases per round of the game, the four phases is the command phase, ship phase, squadron phase, and status phase. The key phases that concern us at this time is the ship and squadron phase.
During the ship phase, ships can use a squadron command to activate squadrons, each ship has a squadron value that determines how many squadrons a ship can activate. When a squadron is activated by a ship, the squadron can move and/or shoot. If it is not activated during the ship phase, it has to be activated in the squadron phase but can only move or shoot, not both. The one exception to that rule is if the squadron has rogue, then during the squadron phase the squadron can move and/or shoot.
To calculate the points per squadron value of a ship we take the points and divide it by the squadron value, this gives us the raw ship to squadron value. The other thing we will take into account is Expanded Hangar Bays. If a ship has the offensive upgrade slot, it can spend 5 points to increase the squadron value by 1 taking Expanded Hangar Bays. If a ship has an Offensive upgrade slot, we will calculate the expanded hangar bays in the points per squadron cost.
For the empire, the Gozanti-class cruiser costs 9 points per squadron value and the Gozanti-class Assault carriers value is 11 points. The rebel flotilla equivalents run at 8 points for the GR-75 Medium Transports, while the GR-75 Combat refits costs 10 points. So, to get the biggest bang for your buck, the flotillas is the best option to command squadrons but have very little in other attack options. They also have fleet support to help support the rest of the fleet.
The empire does not want to use the Arquitens-class Light Cruiser with a points cost of 54 points per squadron it can activate. The rebels do not want to use either MC30 for squadron support with the MC30c Scout Frigate costing 69 points and the MC30c Torpedo frigate costing 63 points.

Adjusted squadron points per damage
Now that we have the point cost of the ship value per squadron activation, we can add that cost to the base cost of each squadron without Rogue. Using that updated value, we have a new estimated cost of squadron value per point of damage. We will analyze this vs squadron, ship, and then take the average of the two values.
Now that we take into account the price of having ships activate squadrons, the YV-666 for the empire at 6 points per damage and the Rogue Squadron for the rebels at 7 points. You will notice that the top 4 squadrons for the empire are rogue and the rebels have 3. The worst squadrons for the empire to take is Captain Jonus at 33 points and Nym for the rebels at 29 points.
Against ships, the empire has the fire spray at the top at 12 points per damage against ships and Colonel Jendon is sitting at the bottom with 58 points. For the Rebels, they are sitting with a B-Wing Squadron at 12.57 points per point of damage against ships and the VCX-100 freighter at the bottom with 46 points. The interesting thing I notice here is how the top four squadrons for the empire in this category have rogue while the rebels top 4 do not have rogue.
When we take the average of points per damage against squadrons and ships, we see for the Empire that Firespray stays at top with 12 points and Colonel Jendon is sitting at the bottom with 38.67 points. The Rebels have the Lancer-class Pursuit Craft at the top with 12.5 points and the VCX-100 freighter at the bottom with 30.67 points. Again, I would like to point out how the Empire top 6 ships are rogue, while the rebels have 2. This almost shows how the rogue is more important for the empire and how much the rebels rely on ships to command their squadrons.

Threat Analysis
In the game of Armada, pure points to damage ratio is not good enough, we need to take into account movement. Squadrons have an attack range of 1, so if they are not in that range they cannot attack. So, to get them in range you need to move a squadron within engagement range. You can take their speed and add range 1 and this ends up being perceived threat of the squadron. Squadrons can move 360 degrees within their range. Squadrons range from speed 2 to 5 using the range ruler which we can call threat range. To take into account speed, I reduced the speed factor by 1 and then took the adjusted squadron points per damage and divided it by the adjusted speed factor. This gives a new Points per damage factoring in threat and adjusted squadron value.
I am going to briefly talk about the rogue ability. As mentioned previously when calculating the adjusted squadron points per damage it allows a squadron to move/shoot in the squadron phase of a round. This allows a squadron to not need a squadron command from a ship to shoot/move. Even if a squadron has the rogue ability, a ship can still choose to activate it using a squadron command. I included this ability in calculating threat factor by not reducing the speed by 1.
When we take into account threat value against other squadrons, for the empire, IG-88 is at the top with a value of 2.10, while Captain Jonus is at the bottom at 11.11 points. For the rebels, YT-2400 is at top with 2 points add Keyan Farlander drops to the bottom at 18.67 points. I found this very interesting in how the rogue ability for the rebels are in the top 5 but number 2 and 3 for the empire are not rogue with the interceptor and defender.
Now we will look at the threat value against ships, for the Empire the Firespray-31 comes in at 4 points while at the bottom is colonel Jendon at 29 points. The Rebels have Gold Squadron at the top with 2.67 points with the YT-2400 at the bottom with 42 points. At this point nothing really surprised me other than Gold Squadron being at the top for the rebels. Otherwise for both the Empire and Rebels, rogue give you the best value.
When looking at versatile ships meaning combining how well they do against both squadrons and ships. For the Empire, IG-88 goes to the top when we start looking at the threat factor but Colonel Jendon is still at the bottom. For the rebels, the Lancer-class Pursuit Craft is the most versatile at 3.13 points with the YT-1300 sitting at the bottom with 28 points.
